The Belfast Review

Deadline: 1st April

Submissions open from 1 March to 1 April, 2024 for Belfast Review’s second issue (31 July) and the Autumn blog (August to November). The magazine accepts fiction, novel excerpts, non fiction, flash fiction, scripts (theatre and film), visual art, comics, photography, song lyrics, hybrid works, and poetry.

Stinging Fly Summer School 2024

Deadline: 1st April

Stinging Fly Summer School will be open for applications from Tuesday 12 March 2024. Taking place in June and July, the in-person workshops (at the Irish Writers Centre) will have no more than 10 participants. The online workshops will have no more than 6 participants in the fiction and non-fiction workshop groups. This opportunity is for fiction writers, creative non-fiction writers and poets. Although there is a fee to take the summer school, free places are available for unwaged/low income applicants.

Date With an Agent at the International Literature Festival Dublin

Returning for its tenth edition, International Literature Festival Dublin and Writing.ie are thrilled to bring back this exciting event for aspiring writers – whether you’re writing for children or adults, for the page or for the screen, this is your chance to connect with an agent who might just be your publishing match made in heaven. Please note, there is a submission & administration fee of €30.00.

Mairtín Crawford Poetry and Short Story Awards

Deadline: 10th April

Created in memory of the late Mairtín Crawford, a writer and poet, these Awards are aimed at writers working towards their first full collection of poetry or short stories, or writing a novel. Both published and unpublished writers are invited to submit between 3-5 poems for the Poetry Award, or a short story of up to 2,500 words for the Short Story Award. The chosen recipient of each award will receive a £500 cash prize. In addition, each awardee will receive a ‘Time to Write’ package, including a 3-night stay at a hotel in Belfast and 4 days of dedicated writing space in The Crescent Arts Centre. The two runners-up for each category will receive a £250 cash prize.

Desperate Literature Short Fiction Prize

Deadline: 14th April

The aim of the Desperate Literature Short Fiction Prize is both to celebrate the best of new short fiction and to give winners the most visibility possible for their writing. They’ve teamed up with fourteen different literary and artistic institutions to not only offer cash prizes and writing retreats but also to ensure that all shortlisters have the opportunity to be published in multiple print and online journals! First Prize: €2000, A week’s residency at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, a consultation with Literary Agent and a manuscript assessment! Runner-up Prizes: €1000 (two prizes available). All Shortlisted Writers: will be published in a limited edition book and a publication with one of our partner journals: Helter Skelter, The London Magazine, Prototype, gorse, Tenement, Kill Your Darlings, Minor Literature[s], The Second Shelf.

2024 John Broderick Residency

Deadline: 17th April 2024

The Westmeath Arts Office and Arts Council invite writers across Ireland to apply for the 2024 John Broderick Residency.

This unique writer’s residency series is designed to honour Athlone writer John Broderick. The series provides support to a selected writer while increasing the awareness of John Broderick, his works, and his engagement and generosity to the people of Athlone.

€16,500 will be granted to a selected professional writer for a 10-week period beginning in September 2024. An additional accommodation stipend of up to €1,200 will be made available where accommodation in Athlone is necessary.

The John Broderick Residency is open to professional writers in all genres. Writers must be over 18 years of age and resident on the island of Ireland.

Writers must demonstrate an ability to mentor emerging writers, young people and those interested in developing their writing skills.

The Dublin Review

Deadline: Ongoing.

The Dublin Review welcomes submissions of fiction and non-fiction previously unpublished in the English language. We do not accept poetry submissions. We especially encourage submissions from members of groups traditionally underrepresented in literary magazines and other cultural forums.
