Aimsir Press

Deadline: 14th October

Marking the beginning of winter in the Celtic calendar, Samhain is a time in which the veil between our world and the Otherworld is believed to be at its thinnest. In folk tradition, this means that the aos sí are able to move between both worlds, and this belief informs the rituals, customs and celebrations associated with this period. For this issue of Aimsir, we are searching for work that communicates the precarity of this time and offers a glimpse into the darkened months ahead. We want to feel the warmth of the summer months disappear, and experience the embodied sense of decay that these intensely spiritual celebrations represent.

The Pig’s Back

Deadline: 15th October

The Pig’s Back seeks submissions of previously unpublished fiction and non-fiction. We accept work from anywhere in the world but currently can only accept English language pieces. We do not accept poetry.

Banshee Issue 17

Deadline: 31st October

Banshee welcomes submissions from both Irish and international writers of any background, including first-time writers. We welcome work from members of groups or communities typically under-represented within literature, whether or not the work addresses this.

Michael McLaverty Short Story Award 2023

Deadline: 31st October

The Michael McLaverty Short Story Award offers a significant prize of £2,000 for the winning story. Additionally, each of the two runners-up will receive a prize of £250.

The Anthology Flash Fiction Competition

Deadline: 31st October

Established to inspire creativity, great writing and to provide a platform for publication. The Anthology Flash Fiction Competition is open to original and previously unpublished flash fiction pieces on any theme or genre in the English language by writers of any nationality, living anywhere in the world. We are looking for writing that is clever and unique, inspires us, and crafts a compelling story.

The Caledonia Novel Award 2024

Deadline: 31st October

The entry fee for The Caledonia Novel Award 2024 is £25 per novel. Novels can be in any genre for adults or young adults. Novels must be at least 50,000 words in length.

Discoveries

Deadline: 8 January 2024

Discoveries invites unpublished and unagented women writers in the UK or Ireland to submit the opening of a novel in English – up to 10,000 words – across any genre of adult fiction for the chance to take part in a bespoke creative writing course, secure personalised mentorship packages, an offer of literary agent representation and a prize of £5000. Unlike most initiatives of this kind, writers are not required to have finished their novel, and Discoveries is completely free to enter.

The Dublin Review

Deadline: Ongoing.

The Dublin Review welcomes submissions of fiction and non-fiction previously unpublished in the English language. We do not accept poetry submissions. We especially encourage submissions from members of groups traditionally underrepresented in literary magazines and other cultural forums.
